I am an “Artist”
My name is Shaylin Singh, I am a Visual Artist from Johannesburg, South Africa. Through my years of learning how to draw, I have spent my whole life creating worlds and stories at the backs of exam papers and in notebooks, however I did not fully commit to being an artist until recently.
I started with studying animation and 3D software but for some reason, it lacked true freedom of creativity, but did teach me valuable artistic lessons when it came to figure and form. I then decided to start drawing characters from comics and games and selling them at various shows like Comic Con Africa. This led to me studying through Unisa and discovering Visual and Multimedia Arts as well as working in and around emerging artists at galleries and I then discovered what I want to spend my life doing. I achieved my Honours in Visual and Multimedia Art, through UNISA in 2023 and now I am a practicing artist looking to work in the gallery space, once that opportunity arises.
For the most part, in my art, I have predominantly worked with a single 2B, 0.5mm lead pencil, which I pretty much use for all portraits and creations. I am not opposed to working in other mediums though as I love to play around with paint and charcoal, as well as finding new ways for a viewer to experience art. It is in the research and storytelling that I find my most joy when it comes to creating, and I will always try to craft intricate narratives for people to enjoy and contemplate.
